This is how the A2 placement test works
The test is free and takes about 8 minutes. You start with 8 tasks at level A1 to assess your foundational knowledge. If you get at least 5 right, you're ready for A2 and can then decide whether to review your results or continue with the A2 section. Before seeing your results, you'll answer three short questions about your learning goal.
The tasks are varied: multiple-choice questions with three answers, fill-in-the-blank exercises where you write the missing word yourself, tasks with pictures, and short reading and listening texts. You will need audio for the listening texts. The tasks are in German, but the interface adapts to the language version of the site, for example, Arabic, English, or Russian.
At the end, you'll immediately see your preliminary result. By providing your email address, you'll receive the complete evaluation free of charge: your result as a percentage, all errors with the correct solutions, a personalized course recommendation, and a 15% discount code.
What you can do at level A2
A2 is the second level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). With A2 you can master typical everyday situations:
| skill | At level A2 |
|---|---|
| hören | You understand the most important points in short, clear announcements and conversations about everyday topics. |
| Read | You can find information in timetables, menus, or short emails. |
| speaking | You do some shopping, make an appointment, and briefly talk about your work or your family. |
| Letter | You write short notes and simple personal messages, for example an invitation. |
The integration course concludes with the German Test for Immigrants. It certifies level A2 or B1; you can find all the details in the guide to the DTZ exam.

Frequently asked questions about the A2 placement test
Is the placement test free?
Yes. The test, the preliminary result, and the complete evaluation via email are free of charge.
Why does the A2 placement test begin with A1 tasks?
This will show you if your basic knowledge is solid. If you can answer at least 5 out of 8 questions correctly, you can move on to A2. Otherwise, the test recommends starting with A1.
When will I be ready for the A2 course?
If you can confidently complete the A1 block, then you know the basics, and the A2 course builds on that.
Will I receive a certificate after the test?
No. The placement test shows you your level and the appropriate course. You only receive an official certificate after passing a recognized exam, for example, the German Test for Immigrants, which certifies A2 or B1 level.
Can I repeat the test?
Yes, as often as you like. A tip: Take the test again after a few weeks of studying. Then you'll see how much better you've become.
If A2 level is sufficient, the online German course A2 continues with explanatory videos, worksheets and pronunciation training.
